I prefer dubs over subs, I'll only watch a sub if there will never be a dub out for that anime... on rare occasion I will watch the sub and then by the dub and re-watch it. (I did that for Shangri-La, I didn't think they would dub it though..)

I hate to sound like a purist, but I just can't see why anyone would only watch dubs and watch a sub if it's never going to have a dub.

I watch both, if I think the English cast is good, then I'll watch it in English, but if it's not, or it won't make sense in English, then I'll watch the subs. There's times where I've found the English cast to be better casted than the Japanese ones.
Here's a few things I despise about this whole argument: 1: People think you can only like one or the other, so you have to either be sub only, or dub only. 2: the double standards over Japanese voice acting. I've lost count how many times people say "the voices are in Japanese so that means it's good!". Just because the voices are in Japanese doesn't mean that they're exempt from either the voices not matching the characters, poor acting or over acting. I've been flamed countless times for pointing out a Japanese VA for overacting. The irony over this is they say "you don't understand the language so you can't tell!!" which is very ironic for me since A: I know the language, and B: they later admit they don't know the language. 3: There's plenty of times where they hate the dubs because they either don't sound exactly like the original VA's, or they saw the subs first, so the first one they saw is the "right" version. The latter is a good assumption because they defend dubbed anime they saw when they were younger, it was the version they saw first, and they didn't like the sub voices. There's more I could rant about this argument, but I did make a big blog post for a friend's blog discussing the pro's and cons of subs and dubs if anyone is interested in it. |
